Wine Regions of Spain

The wine-producing regions of Spain are extremely diverse--from the arid plain of Yecla to the lush fiords of Rias Baixas, from the temperate fields of Catalunya to the high country of Rioja, with its hot days and cold nights. This diversity gives Spanish wine its great variety and many distinctive characteristics. It also presents a baffling array of names and types to the newcomer.

In the right-hand column are listed all the regions from which we currently import. Each region is officially classified as a Denomination of Origin (D. O.), which is governed by a council that regulates the grape varieties, yields, and aging. For a brief description of a region and a list of the wines we import from it, click on the name of the region.

To get to know the regions is to gain a greater appreciation of Spanish wines and to learn a little about Spain's varied landscape and rich history. Click on the map below to see a larger version showing all of the officially recognized wine-producing regions in Spain.
